Lake Macbride Tragedy: Student’s Body Recovered After Deadly Field Trip
Authorities have recovered the body of a fifth-grade student who drowned at Lake Macbride during a school field trip, bringing a devastating end to an extensive search following Monday’s tragic water emergency.
The student, identified as Ahmed Osman, was participating in a School of the Wild outing with other fifth-grade students from Norman Borlaug Elementary School when the incident occurred.
Authorities said the incident was reported shortly after noon Monday after a student entered the water.
Teacher Tried to Rescue Student
According to the investigation, fifth-grade teacher Hannah Jorgensen, originally from Solon, Iowa, entered the lake in an attempt to rescue the student after telling the children to call 911.
Jorgensen and Osman were reportedly pulled toward the middle of the lake by the current.
Another man at the scene also entered the water in an attempt to help the two before law enforcement arrived.
Emergency crews launched a major response, with law enforcement officers, water-rescue personnel, medical crews and aviation resources responding to the area near Macbride Dam Road and the spillway.
Teacher Hannah Jorgensen Dies
During the search, authorities located Jorgensen and brought her from the water.
Despite lifesaving efforts, Jorgensen died following the incident.
Her actions have drawn attention to the risks educators can face while caring for students and to the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the tragedy. She entered the water after seeing a student in danger and attempted to bring him to safety.
Student’s Body Recovered
The search for Osman continued after Jorgensen was located.
Authorities have now confirmed that the student’s body was recovered, providing some closure to a search that continued following the initial emergency.
The circumstances surrounding the drowning remain under investigation, and officials are expected to release additional information as the investigation progresses.
Community Mourns
The tragedy has devastated the Borlaug Elementary School community, the families and friends of those involved, and the many first responders who participated in the search and rescue operation.
School officials previously notified families of students directly involved in the incident, while other students and staff were transported back to Borlaug Elementary School following the emergency.
Law enforcement agencies remained at Lake Macbride for hours as crews worked to search the water and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities were seen clearing the scene and removing crime-scene tape shortly before 9 p.m. Monday.
The loss of both a teacher and a young student has left the community facing an unimaginable tragedy.
As the investigation continues, thoughts and prayers remain with Ahmed Osman’s family, Hannah Jorgensen’s loved ones, their friends and classmates, the Borlaug Elementary School community, and the first responders who worked through the difficult search.
As the community continues to mourn with the two families and with everyone at Norman Borlaug Elementary School, the families will release the funeral plans for the victims.
